So, apparently, the Blackfoot Confederacy has a genetic lineage that goes back 18000 years. That’s right, 18000 years! I didn’t even know they had DNA testing back then, but hey, you learn something new every day, right?
I can just imagine the scientists huddled around their test tubes and microscopes, trying to figure out if Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Great-Grandpa Blackfoot had the same nose as Little Timmy from the village.
But in all seriousness, this discovery is actually pretty cool. It’s amazing to think about the history and resilience of Indigenous peoples, who have been through so much and still stand strong today. And to think that their lineage goes back to the last ice age? That’s some serious staying power.
I can just picture the Blackfoot ancestors, all bundled up in their furs, trying to stay warm as they trudged through the snow and ice. And here we are today, complaining about a little chill in the air. Talk about perspective.
This research also highlights the importance of preserving Indigenous traditions and knowledge. We can learn so much from these communities that have been around for thousands of years.
